Who we are

Who is VicReturn

VicReturn Limited is a not-for-profit entity that was formed by Lion Pty Ltd, Coca-Cola Europacific Partners and Asahi Beverages to bid to become the Scheme Co-ordinator of Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme (CDS Vic). Along with Board Members from the three companies, there is an Independent Chair, with other Independent Directors to be appointed from the waste and recycling industry and from small and medium-size beverage manufacturers. Lion, Coca-Cola Europacific Partners and Asahi Beverages have extensive experience in managing container deposit schemes across Australia, with one or more of the companies involved in every Australian jurisdiction with a container deposit scheme.

Our mission

We seek to make Victoria a leader in beverage container recycling, reducing the amount of beverage containers in litter and landfill, whilst adding value to our local communities, businesses and the environment.

What we do

At VicReturn we are motivated to help keep beverage containers out of landfill, creating clean streams of recycled materials that help to build our Circular Economy by promoting product stewardship of all First Suppliers in Victoria.

As the appointed Scheme Coordinator for Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme (CDS Vic), we work with government and our partners to build and operate a large-scale container recycling network, a key step in transforming Victoria’s waste and recycling system. Through a 10c refund for every eligible container returned, we encourage Victorians to collect and recycle their containers, making a positive difference to our people, environment and local industry.

Our objectives are:

  • Increase recovery and recycling of empty beverage containers
  • Reduce the number of empty beverage containers that are disposed of as litter or landfill
  • Ensure that first suppliers of beverage products take product stewardship responsibility
  • Provide opportunities for social enterprise and benefits for community organisations
  • Create opportunities for employment
  • Complement existing collection and recycling activities for recyclable waste

CDS Vic targets beverage containers that are commonly littered. The types of beverage containers include plastic and glass bottles, paper-board cartons, and steel and aluminium cans between 150 millilitres and three litres.

Examples of beverage containers that can be recycled through CDS Vic are:

  • Soft drink cans and bottles
  • Bottled waters, both plastic and glass
  • Small, flavoured milk drinks
  • Beer and cider cans and bottles
  • Sports drinks and spirit-based mixed drinks

Our people

At VicReturn, our people have come together with a common purpose: to build a successful container deposit scheme and significantly reduce the number of beverage containers ending up as litter or in landfill. It takes a large network to do this effectively, and that’s why our people are good at partnering with others to achieve great results. We have a clear vision and are building a team of action orientated specialists who share a common passion to make real environmental impact, and have the skills and experience to build a world-class CDS for Victoria. Our goal is to be a leading player in our field, achieving outstanding results in the percentage of containers recycled through the scheme.
